What is the difference between Reverse Osmosis and Ultrafiltration?
Two Technologies, One Question
You have heard of Reverse Osmosis. Maybe you have also heard of Ultrafiltration. Both claim to purify water. Both sit under your sink or in your factory. But they are not the same.
One removes almost everything. The other removes some things but keeps healthy minerals.
One wastes water. The other does not.
So which one do you actually need?
Let me explain the difference between Reverse Osmosis and Ultrafiltration in plain language – no engineering degree required.
The Short Answer (For People in a Hurry)
| Feature | Reverse Osmosis (RO) | Ultrafiltration (UF) |
|---|---|---|
| Pore size | 0.0001 microns (extremely tiny) | 0.01 microns (tiny, but larger than RO) |
| Removes | Heavy metals, nitrates, fluoride, microplastics, salt, bacteria, viruses | Bacteria, viruses, sediment, cysts |
| Does NOT remove | Nothing significant (but removes minerals too) | Heavy metals, dissolved solids, salt, fluoride |
| Water waste | Yes – 2–4 litres wasted per litre produced | No – zero waste |
| Electricity needed | Often yes (booster pump) | No (works on water pressure) |
| Mineral content | Removed (flat taste unless remineralised) | Preserved (natural taste) |
| Best for | High TDS, heavy metals, bottled-water quality | Good tap water wanting germ-free, mineral-rich water |
Now let me break that down.
What Is Reverse Osmosis (RO)?
Reverse Osmosis pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane with pores so tiny – 0.0001 microns – that only water molecules can squeeze through.
What an RO machine removes:
- Lead, arsenic, mercury (heavy metals)
- Nitrates and fluoride
- Chlorine and chloramines (with carbon pre-filter)
- Microplastics and salt
- Bacteria and viruses (with proper pre-filtration)
The trade-off: RO also removes healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium. The water tastes “flat” to some people. Many premium RO systems now add a remineralisation stage to fix this.
Best for: Homes with high TDS (total dissolved solids), known heavy metals in borehole water, or families that want bottled-water quality without buying plastic bottles.
What Is Ultrafiltration (UF)?
Ultrafiltration also uses a membrane. But the pores are larger – 0.01 microns. That is still incredibly small (a human hair is 50 microns). But it is 100 times larger than an RO pore.
What a UF machine removes:
- Bacteria and viruses
- Sediment, sand, rust
- Cysts (like giardia)
What UF does NOT remove:
- Heavy metals (lead, arsenic, etc.)
- Dissolved solids (TDS)
- Salt
- Fluoride
- Minerals (calcium, magnesium stay in the water)
The advantage: UF produces zero wastewater. Everything that goes in comes out as clean water – no wasted litres.
The other advantage: UF keeps healthy minerals. The water tastes natural, not flat.
Best for: Homes with city water that only needs bacteria and sediment removed. Also great for areas where water conservation matters.
Which One Should You Choose?
This depends entirely on your water quality results.
Choose Reverse Osmosis if:
- Your TDS (total dissolved solids) is high – above 200 ppm
- You have tested positive for heavy metals (lead, arsenic, etc.)
- You want the purest possible drinking water
- You are willing to accept some water waste
- You plan to start a water refill business (commercial RO)
Choose Ultrafiltration if:
- Your TDS is low (below 150 ppm)
- Your main concern is bacteria or viruses (borehole with germs)
- You have sediment or dirt in your water
- You do not want to waste water
- You want to keep natural minerals for taste

Why House of Maji Is the Best Company to Visit for RO and UF Machines
Here is what makes House of Maji the right choice for both Reverse Osmosis Machines and Ultrafiltration machines:
1. They Test Your Water First – So You Get the Right Technology
The biggest mistake is buying RO when you need UF, or UF when you need RO. House of Maji starts every project with certified water analysis – scientific testing of physical, chemical, and microbiological properties. They will tell you which technology actually fits your water.
2. They Supply Both RO and UF Machines – For Homes and Businesses
We are not limited to one technology. Whether you need a domestic under-sink RO, a whole-home UF system, or a commercial RO for a refill business, they have it. They design, supply, and install custom systems.
3. They Have Real Local Experience – With Numbers to Prove It
Their track record: 97+ homes, 44+ refill businesses, 15+ schools, 12+ hotels. Many of those installations were RO or UF systems. They know what works in Kenya and what fails.
